No matter where I am I have friends who are half a world away. I want to stay connected and keep my supporters informed. Some times I will be very busy and only update once in a while. Other times I might bore you with how much I have to say :) Just check back once in a while when you are thinking of me and see what I'm up to!

Happy Christmas!

Hello all!

Things are going well here.  The day to day stuff takes a while to learn...laundry is done by hand and although they want to spoil me and do it, I need to learn.  The hard part for me is they don't really use toilet paper or tissues. There is a faucet with running water and a dipper bucket at most places so if it's just pee I'm good, but we try to carry baby wipes and alcohol cleanser everywhere.  Showers are cold water dumped over you (or occasionally a shower head) which actually feels pretty amazing most of the time.  If there isn't a shower head it takes forever to just get my hair wet through to get started! Thankfully Jonah got spoiled living in the States so here at the house there is a shower head and usually TP.

The food is pretty good.  Every meal has rice...breakfast isn't usually any different from the others.  The first few days it was lots of fried pork and that cleaned me out to put it politely. When they realized I like vegetables and am willing to eat just about anything that changed.  Most meals consist of some kind of soup.  The liquid is spooned over the rice and is quite delicious with a variety of flavors.  Jess doesn't eat much fish so I'm saved there!

Life is Juagdan is so much simpler than back in the States.  I think some of it has to do with the fact that I don't understand all that goes on yet.  The house and the orphanage are right next to each other in what Jess usually refers to as 'The Compound' because the church is also here as well as the two businesses that support their ministry (laying chickens and purified water).  Pastor Iggle and Pastora Melina also have a house in the compound.  It is always busy around here and that is something I have to get used to as I have not been surrounded by people in a long time.  That and my introverted self needs some space at times.

The kids were a bit shy at first, but have warmed up to me. It seems amazing how quickly time flies and that I have been here for more than 3 weeks already!  I'm getting a fairly good idea about how the regular routine works, but things could even change by the time I come back in a year.  I do know that this has been a good opportunity to meet people and get reacquainted from the 6 year gap since my last visit.  I am hopeful it will not take too long to raise the financial support necessary to get started on my way back to this beautiful country.

Just as I was starting to get used to Juagdan and the people around we headed out for 9 days!  Jonah helps leading the young people from the church and they have some great outreach activities. This particular trip was a two fold experience and that is why it was so long.  Traveling here takes a lot of time.  You drive to a port, see if you can get the ferry to the next island and if not drive another hour to the next port.  To go to the first event we drove about 2 1/2 hours pre-dawn to a particular port, then caught a 2 hour ferry ride to Cebu, then drove another 2ish hours, found out the boat we wanted was full but thankfully they had another in a couple of hours, that was just a short 45 minute ride, and finally about a 3 hour drive through the mountains of Negros Occidental.  We spent 4 days in a very, very rural community where the young people lead a worship conference for a church in San Agustin on the Northern end of the island.  We celebrated their church thanksgiving on Christmas day with them.  It was quite the feast and activities, but no ham and pumpkin pie!

After this we picked up 6 additional passengers from their church to go to the next event.  That meant we had 19 people in all as well as luggage in a Chevy Colorado.  You can't do that in the States!  Thankfully it was only about a 3 1/2 hour drive to Dawis, Negros Oriental on the south side of the island.  Here is was sort of like a cross between the CRC's youth convention and a classis meeting.  The pastor from Juagdan met us there and lead the last session while our young people lead worship.  Despite not understanding most of what was said or sung I could feel the presence of God and young lives being touched.  Pastor Iggle is a very passionate man and isn't afraid to show it!  We left there yesterday morning only 14 passengers strong this time!  We were inland enough we had a minimum of 2 hours to the first port and thankfully they had boats leaving every half hour because it is a short distance to Cebu from that port.  We only waited about 20 minutes and it was maybe a 20 minute ride.  We stopped for breakfast and then headed out to get to Cebu City to extend my visa which would have been about a 3 1/2 hour ride.  Jonah realized it was a national holiday the next day and we have time to renew my visa, so we were just going to find the closest port to take us to Bohol just to make sure we could get there.  Turns out three ports didn't have openings so we ended up in Cebu City anyway.  We stopped at the very Western mall for lunch and the rest of the group shopped while Jonah and I found the immigration office just to find out they had closed just an hour before due to the holiday weekend...Good thing I have until the 7th because they won't even open again until the 3rd!  Due to the extra load for the holidays we weren't able to get a ferry until 9pm, thankfully it was the closest port to Juagdan though.  We finally arrived home at 3 am, nearly 24 hours after our departure from Dawis!

Now we are settling back in to the regular routine, but the local church is having their holiday parties today and tomorrow.  Considering the late start to my day (9:00am) I feel very accomplished.  I bathed, unpacked, cleaned up the kitchen, cleaned out the truck, and washed equivalent to two loads of laundry... all by 1:00.   Now I've been resting and writing this update.

To review a bit about the English program... We have had a few miscommunications, but are working on it.  I've heard from a fair number of church members and know I have a lot of ahead of me.  There is already a lot of interest even though they know it will be at least a year if not more before the program even starts.  I have also gotten a lot of great questions about how things will work for timing and covering all levels.  It excited me that at least some people here understand the difficult task I have ahead!  Pastora Melina (aka Mama Anging) has been very busy at their store because her boys have been called away to their other jobs so we haven't worked out details yet, but she promised me some time when we came back from Negros.  I already have a list of questions for her and hope to get a letter of invitation by the time I leave.  I already have pages and pages of notes for planning, I just want to work out details with Mama before I get started.

My biggest prayer requests are for good health to return and time to meet with Mama Anging.  While traveling several of us caught some kind of cough and runny nose...hence my struggle with the lack of tissues.  I'm on the mend and have finally found the appropriate relief meds as well as a more relaxed schedule.  At least 2 of the kids are still sick as well as 2 or 3 of the young people and they have to get back to working after 9 days away.  Hopefully by Monday Ken will be feeling better and can watch the store while Pastora and I talk.

I hope Christmas was wonderfully spent praising God for sending his son because without Christmas we don't have Easter!  May God bless you all in the new year to come and I will talk to you in 2017!

(Pictures to come sometime in January, hopefully ☺)

T-minus 2 days...

It is amazing how quickly time flies by.  It feels like it was just last week that I was leaving GR and still had 50 days to wait until embarking on the next leg of my Filipino journey.

Tonight as I write this I have made a packing list, checked it numerous times, packed my bags, and weighed them.  I am leaving town in 36 hours!
Two checked bags... heavy, but well underweight.
One carry on... contains clean clothes 😉
One personal item... things to do and eat!
The most amazing thing about this journey is how much peace and calm I have experienced around it.  Sure there have been a few fleeting moment of questioning.... What in the world have I gotten into?  Will this really work?  Am I really following the right path?... Every time it is just a moment or at most a few minutes and then I am calm again.  Even now, with just 36 hours to go I am just plugging away at daily life.

I think it has helped that I have had the task of working on my master's class and a week of vacation!  My class is going well and I really only have one major assignment to finish.  I am hopeful a large chunk of it will be completed tomorrow, but I have until December 19th so even with that I am fairly well relaxed.  Really I just have two write out 5 lesson plans... I've done hundreds of those by now 😉  The week of Thanksgiving my parents and I were able to take the time to drive to Colorado and stay with my brother and his family.  What an adventure that was with nine people living under the same roof for a week.
Grand baby number four was born in October so she isn't even 2 months old yet!
In these last hours I am extremely thankful for some last minute donations.  Due to the generosity of a few supporters in the past two weeks I am only about $250 short of what I was hoping to cover in support for this trip.  Just so you know, that means $700 in cash donations and possibly as much as an additional $1000 worth of supplies have been donated in support of The House of Hope Philippines and preparation for the English language program.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!

I don't know if I ever shared this, but the donations filled two of the large shipping boxes. 😍  It can take from 2-3 months for the packages to arrive and considering their immense size and weight it is wonderful that they are delivered right to the Cajigas' door.  Jessica informed me that the first box reached them on November 30.  They were so grateful and overwhelmed at the blessings showered on them.  I am hopeful the second box will arrive the week of Christmas, but even if it doesn't, joy and excitement will be heard and seen when its contents are shared.

I am excited that the next time you hear from me I will be on the ground in the Philippines!  I appreciate your prayers and financial support in this endeavor and appreciate continued support.

PRAYER REQUESTS:
*Visa, I'm still a little nervous about this because I am cutting it close on the dates but I have been assured it shouldn't be a problem

*School, I am finishing one class as I travel to the Philippines and we have a holiday break, but I will have another starting just before I return

*Travel, I have a 17 hour layover in Tokyo and it makes me nervous I'll fall asleep and miss my flight

*Cajigas Family, they have a lot of projects going and could always use additional prayer!

*Melina, she is the outreach pastor I will be working with and we need to have clear communication

*Language Program, a large part of this trip is to work out what kind of program I will create

*Future Budget, a second major part of this trip is to work toward a comprehensive budget for myself and the future ministry

*Application, I have put the application on hold to get more answers from this visit, but it is an intense process which includes a letter of invitation, some essays, and mission references.  If this initial phase is accepted then interviews and training will follow sometime last winter or early spring.

Apologies

Friends and Family!  I'm sorry, it has been way too long since I have shared an update.  So much has happened.

I finished my AmeriCorps term on August 19.
I found income with Comprenew and Kuyper during September.
I secured a storage unit at an amazing rate on September 19.
My roommate and I moved out of our apartment on September 30.
My new niece was born October 10.
I got to meet her and see the other nieces/nephew October 18/19.
I arrived at my parents October 20.

Also mixed in there, I moved Frenchie to her new home, completed another class, figured out visa information, and had enough donations to fill and send 2 boxes to the Philippines.  The second will hopefully arrive in time for Christmas or at least New Year's Day.

I want to be sure to thank you for all the support that has been shared.  Prayers have numerous and so I have felt a peace and calm that has made the days fly by.  The cost involved with both packages was covered in either donated goods or financial support which is an amazing blessing.  I have also received a little bit of financial support to offset the cost of getting me there.  I will be departing from Tucson International Airport in 36 days.  AMAZING!

The big question at this point is:  Am I prepared?  I am happy to report that I am mostly prepared.  I think I am still going to get an updated tetanus shot and I apparently packed my good flashlight in storage in MI so I will need to get a new one of those.  Otherwise, I just need to be sure to not wait until the last minute to pack just in case I think of something else.

There are a few things I would like to ask you in regards to the next 36 days (as well as the 42 in country).  Mostly, I would love for you to continue to pray for myself and all involved.  I will include a list of specific things at the end of this post.  I'm not sure what my internet capabilities will be while I am in country, so you should request to join the 'Philippine 2016' group I created.  I hope to add updates, even if just a sentence or two, once a week when we go into the city for market day.  Even if I am not able to consistently add, I will publish photos on that page when I return.  The last thing I would like to ask is for you to considering making a financial donation to support me in this ministry.

As of right now, only about a quarter of the cost of this initial adventure has been covered.  I had been hopeful to receive at least enough donations to cover half of the cost.  This means I have fallen short by about $500-600.  I know it is more difficult for some people to make donations, and some would like to wait until tax deductible donations can be accepted, but it is discouraging to only raise half of what I hoped.  If I am being honest, this makes me nervous for how long it will take me to raise the support needed to go for the long term.  I am no where close to a final budget, but I have been making notes and setting up a framework for the future budget.  For startup alone it will be at least $10,000 and I will also be required to have a certain percentage of my monthly budget in pledged donations before I can even book a flight.  So, if you are feeling the Spirit's leading to suppose a new missionary, I would welcome your support.  Even if you are ready to start making a small monthly donation arrangements can be made as I set up a ministry specific account to make sure I have a place to deposit donations.  Once 50% of this trip is covered, the remainder of donations will be saved in that account to begin building my startup fund.

Thank you for taking the time to read up on me.  Feel free to leave a message or connect with me directly if you want to hear more!

PRAYER REQUESTS:

  • Visa, I'm a little nervous because of the political changes in the Philippines
  • Packing, that I remember all the things I need and don't over pack
  • Financial, I am still hoping to raise an additional $500-600
  • Gifts, that we didn't miss any of the children and if more come that I can come up with gifts
  • Class, I have started the next one and it overlaps with my trip, YIKES!
  • Travel, for things to go smoothly and enough on time to not miss connections
  • Orphans, last I head a couple of them were sick and had to miss out on a mission project
  • Cajigas Family, they have a lot of projects going and could always use additional prayer!
  • Melina, she is the outreach pastor I will be working with and we need to have clear communication
  • Language Program, a large part of this trip is to work out what kind of program I will create
  • Future Budget, a second major part of this trip is to work toward a comprehensive budget for myself and the future ministry
  • Application, I have put the application on hold to get more answers from this visit, but it is an intense process which includes a letter of invitation, some essays, and mission references.  If this initial phase is accepted then interviews and training will follow sometime last winter or early spring.

Let the count down begin!

There are so many changes that are happening in the next 6 months.  In case you have just tuned in or haven't checked up in a while there are a lot of plans in the works for the next 6 months.  Here is a general itinerary:

End of August: Visit friends in NJ to celebrate end of Service term
End of September: Move out of apartment
Middle of October: Drive across the country to move to Arizona
Thanksgiving Week: Visit the family in Denver (including new niece/nephew)
Beginning of December: Fly to the Philippines!
Middle of January: Return to Arizona
Undetermined Time in the Spring: Return to Michigan

It is only 117 days until I get to return to the Philippines :)  I am sooo excited!  Last night I looked around my apartment and started to get overwhelmed at all the small tasks I have to do in the next 7 weeks to prepare for all of these things.

Complete AmeriCorps term
Verify that I have a storage unit
Sort out what goes to the Philippines in the next box
Sort out what goes to long term storage
Sort out what goes to temporary storage
Start my next graduate class
Move my pet (Frenchie the Turtle) to her new place
Figure out Visa information
Figure out if I need vaccinations
Clean the apartment
Figure out where I am staying for the first two weeks of October
Earn some money in there somewhere to pay for all of these things

Okay, so it's not all small things, but that's how I need to look at it so I don't get overwhelmed.  I am so appreciative of the support I have around me.  I can tell people are praying for me because despite all of this I am remarkably calm and collected most of the time.  I still have some concerns when it comes to budget, but I am constantly reminded that God has provided for me every step of the way my entire life.  I may not be living large, but God is equipping me for the call he has placed in my life.

Thank you for partnering with me in this tumultuous time in life!  It truly is an Adventure in Missions!

Letter to Share...

Ladies and Gentleman,
The time has finally come.  I have graduated with my TESOL certification and I am in the final stages of preparation to teach overseas.  If you are just tuning in, God has been preparing me to teach English in the Philippines for the last several years.  2018 is the year!  Okay, at least I pray with your help it will be the year.  I am going to spend 6 weeks this winter in Juagdon, Bohol as a preparation for the longer term mission.  Lord willing, this long term would hopefully be at least 3-5 years starting some time in 2018, depending on funding.
This next year will be about creating a curriculum, determining what my duties beyond teaching would entail and raising financial support to match my spiritual and moral support.  As of right now the plan is that this fall I will apply to Commission to Every Nation (CTEN) in partnership with the Evangelical Church of Christ Universal (ECCU) and House of Hope: Philippines (orphanage).  I am currently in conversation with Melina Dupalco and the Cajigas family whom are currently serving in Juagdon’s community.  It is my hope to come alongside them as a compliment to their existing programs.
For the up coming visit I have several goals. The first of which is to maintain the connection to the community and those already serving the people. It has been 6 years since I have been able to be on the shores of Bohol and spend time getting to know it's people. An additional goal is to find out what programs are already in place so as to compliment and not replicate. I am excited for many conversations with Melina as the outreach pastor of the ECCU and hope she is able to connect me with those who truly represent the population of Juagdon. My last goal which is just as important, if not more so than any of the others, is to listen to the people to learn what they want and need. I will arrive with ideas, but I want their needs to guide my decisions in preparing the curriculum.
Here is where I need you. There are many moving parts to this plan. YOUR PRAYER SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED IN THIS TIME OF TRANSITION! With out the prayers of the body of Christ this will be an even more difficult road to follow. I know God has called me to this place. It is a call he planted and has been watering since my very first visit in 2004. In preparation of this visit, I have a team working on gathering some needed supplies for the orphanage and its inhabitants. This will include putting together at least one care package, but more than likely 2 or even 3. There are currently 9 orphans and at least one staff member besides the Cajigas family and we want to bless the sinelas off of them! Well, they don't often wear socks so their flipflops will have to do :)
If you feel called to support this endeavor in a physical way there are several choices. You can donate supplies from the list posted to the left of this blog. You can connect with me about sponsoring one of the orphans with a Christmas package. You can sponsor the shipping costs for one (or more) of the care package boxes. Or, as the budgeted cost to fulfill this endeavor is at $2075, you can send a monetary donation to the address listed below. I am also able to accept card donations through ProPay or transfers through PayPal.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! WITH OUT MY CHRISTIAN FAMILY THESE THINGS WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE! AMEN and AMEN.

Summer Swing

Summer is definitely here!

The following is a lot to take in, so here is the short version in bullet point prayer requests:
*Sorting/Packing my stuff
*Care package donation to come in
*Financial support raising
*Starting graduate school
*Transition out of MI (temporarily)

For most of my life summer has been the time for transitions.  It has a lot to do with school year calendars and being the most friendly time to do the "unusual" things of life.  Right now I am working on a lot of little projects.

I have my tickets booked!!!!!!!  I will be traveling December 6th - January 17th.  The process was smooth, so thank you so much for your prayers.  I have confirmation in hand for the tickets and insurance papers are on the way.

I have started to go through my physical possessions.  One of the hardest things is trying to determine what should be kept, stored, or given away.  As a perpetual student and book lover I have quite the collection of resources.  I have been blessed over the past few years to increase my collection of fine books.  But how do I decide what to save and what to pass on to the next person?  I have someone who is willing to store a couple of boxes of books in a safe and dry place, but is a couple of boxes enough?  Or is it too much?  The danger of starting a book collection before being settled in a long term place... oh well.  Next stop, the storage closet... ugh.

I am working with the Cajigas family to produce a ministry donation list.  I have a start to a list on the left side of this blog.  The list has two (2) parts.  The first is a list of things the orphanage needs.  The second part is a list of things I will need while I am there, but the orphanage/Cajigas family will also use them after I am gone.  I have not verified yet, but I think most any personal hygiene items for kids and even adults would be appreciated.  Also, new or gently used clothing and possibly shoes as they now have somewhere near a dozen kids in their care.  As needs arise I will add and edit the list. Oh, and don't forget they also love to get art work from the families back here in the states:)  The summer care package will be sent no later than August 15th.  Please contact me if you have things to add to the box(es).

I have not set to writing my budget for the upcoming trip, but estimates show it will be close to $2000 including travel costs and the care package and shipment.  If you are willing and able financial support as well as supplies would be greatly appreciated.  In the months to follow my Dec/Jan visit long term budgets will be created and requests for donations of other resources will be sent out.

In three weeks I will be taking my first official graduate level classes!  I am excited and nervous at the same time.  I really did take a year off school, but it hardly feels like it to most people. (Myself included!) You have to love the joy of federal student loans!  I have officially finished my paperwork and the cost of classes are covered... I'm just close to doubling my already hefty sized student loan debt.

And last but not least, for those of you who do not know... in this time of preparation for the future I am making a cross-country move (temporarily) again.  My current contract position ends in August and my lease expires in September.  That means I get to spend October and November with my family!  This is why the need to sort through my personal belongings this summer.  I will be returning to West Michigan sometime in the spring.

P.S. - For those of you who are astute and noticed there was nothing yet said about the Mission Agency and application... I have decided to hold off until at least after the transition to AZ to complete and submit the application.

What's the plan Stan?

I'm always talking about the Philippines.  My students even keep asking me, "So teacher when are you going to leave us?"  Well, every day I am one step closer to making it a reality.

In the last two weeks I have solidified travel dates for the short term visit, talked to a travel agent about it, opened a ministry specific account, and worked toward filling out the sending agency application.

"But, Christine, what does all of that mean?"

Well, I had to wait for the new account card to come, but tomorrow I will be calling the travel agent back to officially book the flight.  I will most likely be going December 6th - January 14th.  Flight availability might change it by a day or two.

Although they would not yet be tax deductible donations I have a separate account set up if anyone would like to start sending me financial support to include the short term trip.

Also, by the end of the week I hope to have the sending agency application sent in.  If I am approved, meaning that my vision fits within their mission, I will get deputized to begin officially raising tax-deductible funds.  This organization would also be another way I would be able to stay connected to you all as my supporters.

Most importantly what all of this means is I have several specific prayer request:
*For details of the flight to be easy to figure out
*For financial support to start coming in
*For guidance in being true to myself and reality in filling out the application
*For patience through the approval process
*For the process to be smooth and painless
*Also for smooth transitions in the next 3 months for me

Sleepless Nights...

It is now 1:46 a.m.

I should have been asleep almost 2 hours ago.  Instead my brain is swirling.  There is so much information being processed I will never be able to process it all.  However, just like a good sermon there are three key points.

#1. Wrapping up with my Literacy Center learners
#2. Preparing for the start of my Master's program
#3. The Philippines is happening for real this time

I know, right !?!  Three huge bombshells.  Boom!  BOOM! BOOOOMM!!!

It has been a whirlwind of a year.  We are down to just one week of classes at Sibley's Parent English classes.  I have had 31 different learners over the past 8 months.  18 of them are still current and actively attending classes :)  Despite the fact that I will not miss the AmeriCorps side of things, I will desperately miss my students.  There is still hope that I will have them in my summer computer classes... but it's just not the same.

I have learned a lot in the past 8 months with these students.  As much as I have heard, "You don't need to know their language to teach them English," I am grateful to have known some Spanish before this began.  I also know I gained much respect from them for having given it an effort.  Just the practice of listening to them speak increased my knowledge and confidence in usage. :)

Shortly into my current teaching year I had some conversations that lead me to realize I'll never really be done with school and getting an education.  As a teacher you will always be a student as well.

I have had a passion for language for a very long time.  If you look at my "bucket list" I have included "learn Italian."  Who does that?  In the past 5 years that passion has turned into a desire to teach English as a second language.  This can be such a huge thing even here in the US.  I did have one stipulation though, I want to teach adults not children.  Again, who does that?

Well, long story short if I want to teach adults English here in the US I pretty much already need a Master's degree, much less in 5 years when I plan to be coming back from teaching overseas.  That means I'm starting my next round of higher education.  Starting July 18 (yes that is only about 8 weeks away) I will be in the M.A. Tesol program at Cornerstone University.

The program at Cornerstone will take me about 18 months... but I'm gonna give myself some slack and say I'll be pleased if I finish it in less than half the time it took for my undergrad ;)

So, what about #3?  You must be really curious by now... so my tentative human plan is just getting started (even after 5+ years of visioning).  When I am finished with my AmeriCorps term I will spend a couple of months visiting with my family.  Then for December and most of January I will be travelling to Bohol!  I am sooooo excited :D  Lord willing, I will be purchasing the plane ticket for this excursion sometime in the next two weeks.  Details will follow...

I'm calling this visit my "research trip."  Anyone who wants to is more than welcome to join me :)  I will be going to see how the Cajigas family's ministry is going and asking lots of questions of the outreach pastor in their local church.  I want to observe the community as much as possible and see where they need/want to use English.  With help I will evaluate where the majority stands in their level of usage and comprehension.

In the year following I will do 4 main things:  a. Finish my Master's degree; b. collect materials and create a curriculum; c. work toward raising funds to support the program; and d. make attempts to learn Cebuano.

It is now 2:16 a.m.  I am not less sleepy... wait, was that a yawn.  I hope so.  Yes, perhaps I can get some rest now.

I will ask for your prayers in the coming months.  I have felt like plans are coming together so many times in the past only to be disappointing.  I really want what is God's best for me and the people I will reach in my lifetime, but Lord may it please be now!

My theme verse:
Psalm 27:14
Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.
